In The Myx with Myxter Hyde
Note: The host of this podcast personally reached out and asked me to review his 2nd episode. At the time of this post, he’d already published episode 9 of his show. He might have already corrected some of the things I mentioned below so it might be old news to him, but I’m gonna leave the review up in its entirety because it always helps more than just this individual host. Enjoy.
Identified host(s)?
Yup. Myxter Hyde aka JV
Explained what the show is about?
He explained what this particular episode was about, but not what the show will be about in general.
New Podcaster tip: It’s always a good idea to tell the listener what the show is about. It lets them know they’ve made the right choice and that they should keep coming back.
Time to topic
The topic is the interview with Josh. It took 24 minutes to get there. However, he spent the time on a segment called “In the mix” where he told a really compelling story. A compelling story will pretty much outperform anything when it comes to podcasting so I have no beef here.
Show structure/type
One host, monologue and interview.
Topic(s) discussed
An awkward story about a first date gone very wrong, racial fetishism (interesting, I never heard of this), the importance of porn. Interview with Josh Hallmark included: some details on the podcasts he produces, HIV (Josh has HIV), Josh’s origin story, debunking peoples’ prejudices, gay pron and racial fetishism again, Myxter talked about meeting a guy who had a porn channel, bug chasing (apparently this is a thing where people are intentionally trying to get infected via sex), podcasts vs radio (Josh provided a pretty eye-opening message. The whole discussion betwixt Josh and Myxter was intriguing), food, Hermes (God of speed), and a non conventional super power.
Audio quality
I speak a lot about the “sitting in an empty room” sound and Myxter definitely had that going on here, but it wasn’t a huge deal because I could hear everything without adjusting my levels.
There was some peaking all throughout the episode. Peaking is when your levels are so loud that if someone maybe laughs hard, you’ll hear some distortion. Go to around the 1:06:50 mark to hear an example. The fix for this is easy enough…just keep your levels at around -12db and watch the levels of your recording device as well.
Josh sounded muffled with a side of light echo (but I didn’t have to readjust my audio to hear him). I have a fix for this too, but I’d actually have to know more about Myxter’s setup in order to help.
Passion/personality
Obviously here. You can hear the passion when Myxter told the story in the beginning and you could sense it in his excitement during the interview.
Mentioned socials/site(s)?
Yes. Twitter and IG. See links below.
Mentioned schedule?
Yeah. “about a week”. This is good. It’s much better than nothing. At least here the listener has some sort of expectation.
Mentioned hashtag?
No. If you don’t understand the importance of not only having, but also announcing and using hashtags for your podcast, just see Berry. For Myxter, I’d suggest #theMyxPod. It’s short, easy to say and remember and it’s unused on Twitter. Hell, even #myxPod works.
Asked anything of the audience/call-to-action(CTA)?
He asked the audience to share and review the show. I think it’s REALLY important to ask your listener to share your podcast so good job here by Myxter. An endorsement from a friend weighs WAAAY more than a quick review when it comes to getting others to listen to your podcast.
Show notes
It looks like he’s using podbean for hosting. They give you the ability to add show notes to your posts. The show notes for this episode were pretty standard. I would only say that maybe a link to the podcast he referenced in the In The Mix segment would’ve been good. I added the link below.
Summary
Myxter did an excellent job with the story at the beginning of the episode. He was very vivid and captured my attention. It was a dope ass way to intro the episode.
I might be wrong, but it sounded like Myxter was a little nervous during the interview and at points, it was a little distracting, but it didn’t have to be because he could have edited it out. When his “nervousness” didn’t creep in, he was doing GREAT. I think he asked very engaging questions of Josh, he obviously is a real fan of his work and he was genuinely excited to do the interview. It was a really good conversation.
Recommendation(s)
I’m not big on editing when it comes to an interview style show, but in this case I think Myxter missed an opportunity. Had he edited, he could have done his story MUCH more justice. In addition, he could have shaved some time off the episode (which brings me to my next point).
As a first episode, I wouldn’t recommend going 1:46 mins (I realize this is his 2nd show). It’s a lot to ask a brand new listener to commit that much time to someone they don’t know. It’s a lot even for someone with a built in audience.
Apparently there was a technical glitch that caused them to record twice. My ears perk up when I hear stuff like this so I’d like to actually know what happened.
He mentioned the weekday at one point during the episode. I always recommend that you only mention days/months/dates if it lends itself to the story.
I’ve never heard of Josh or his podcast. It would have been dope for Myxter to introduce the guest’s podcast and break down why I should be interested. In other words, get me as interested in Josh as he is, so as to give the interview more context.
More Editing… there was a lot of “thinking out loud” that Myxter did. This isn’t typically THAT big of a deal, but in this case, I would have been looking for ways to cut down on the length of the episode by editing these out.
So this one is two-fold. During the recording of the interview, Myxter explained what racial fetishism was. In the intro to the episode, he explained it again. As the listener, I had to listen to this twice. I would have recommended cutting the explanation out of the interview portion because at that point, I’ve already got a detailed explanation in the intro. It would have 1 – made the experience for the listener better and 2 – again…saved time.
In Conclusion
I really enjoyed listening to this podcast, but it’s a perfect example of why I do what I do. Myxter told a great story and conducted an interesting and engaging interview, but there are people that will never know because they might tune in and hear the audio and bail. Or they might feel some type of way because he didn’t take time out to do some extra editing. Also, they might see “1:46” and not even click. My recommendation here would be to try to get it under an hour via editing.
