Review: Sister Talks
Identified hosts?
Yup. Alexandria and Anaston (with special guest Jazmine)
Explained what the show is about?
Yup. Friendships, relationships, the professional world for millennials, mental and physical wellness.
Time to topic
About a minute. Perfect
Show structure/type
Two hosts, one guest, located in three different geographic locations
Topic(s) discussed
Definition of a sister | the support of a tribe | the growth of their friendship | more in-depth talk about their personal tribes and friends | compartmental friends | how God leads you to those in your tribe | how friendships are like bank accounts | personal pearls of wisdom (they shared four).
Audio quality
Needs work. It was hard to hear Jazmine (who was on the phone). See recommendations below.
Passion/personality
Anaston and Alexandria both sounded passionate via their personality. Their guest, Jazmine, though I could barely hear her, sounded passionate about tribes as well.
Mentioned socials/site(s)?
No site mentioned, but I believe it might be because they don’t have one yet.
No social accounts were mentioned, but they’re listed below in the link section.
Mentioned schedule?
Kind of. At the end, Anaston said “catch us in May”. They originally dropped this on Apr 30th I believe. So “catch us in May” could mean one episode a month? I’m not sure.
Mentioned hashtag?
No. Here are some suggestions though: #SisterTalksPod and #SisterTalksPodcast both look ripe for the picking
Ask anything of the audience/call-to-action(CTA)?
No. Some suggestions: “subscribe on iTunes”, “leave us a review”, “don’t forget to join our newsletter” etc. These seem typical, but they’re always a good prod to the audience.
Summary
I like what these ladies are doing. I like the focused topic of what having a tribe is all about. A lot of young women (and men) would benefit from this convo. Knowing why having a tribe is important. What a tribe looks like and how the support should feel are also important. It can cause folks to immediately look into the value of their friends and/or support system(s). Personally, I started to think “I wonder if I’m taking too many withdrawals from one of my “friendship accounts” (Alex explains this around the 33 minute mark). I think they’ll have a good show going forward.
Recommendation(s)
I have two recommendations.
First off, there’s the nightmare of trying to record three people who are in three geographic locations at once. When just beginning a podcast, it’s best to just get the content out and worry about the technical stuff later. If, however, you MUST get technical, keep it free and simple. That is…free of charge (if at all possible) and as simple as possible to set up and operate.
So, if I were Anaston and Alex, I would just open an account with FreeConferencePro.com (it’s free), call each other and record the call. If they wanted to include a guest (like Jazmine in this first episode), they could have her dial into the conference as well.
If they wanted to step up the audio quality, they could get a couple of USB mics and call each other like normal. This is a ‘less than 70 dollar’ solution for each of them.
I think it’s important to make it easy on your guest when you invite them on your show. So imagine if all you had to do was say “here…dial into this number, at this time” vs trying to work through Skype and Google Hangouts issues.
Next, I’d absolutely recommend that the hosts get familiar with Berry from Podcasts in Color on Twitter (I saw Alex was already following her). Berry is a HUGE advocate for podcasters of color. She drops great information on podcasting the medium and of the industry itself. She invented the #podsInColor and #podin hashtags that a TON of podcasters now use. She’ll also give you her honest opinion if you ask for it.
I’d also recommend signing up on Berry’s website to be listed on the largest directory of Podcasters of color. She has a rule though. She wants you to be at least three episodes in before you do. This is the sign up page.
